English Houses 1300-1800: Vernacular Architecture and Social Life

Professor Matthew Johnson of Southampton University wrote:
This lecture reflected on fifty year's work on the study of vernacular architecture since the death of OGS Crawford. It asked the question: what can we say about the national story of traditional buildings? How do we take the many fascinating local and regional studies from all corners of the land, and translate them into a national picture? This lecture considered two crucial moments in the story of ordinary buildings: the Reformation, and the so-called 'rise of Georgian' in the 18th century. It asked how we can move back and forth, between the smallest details of houses on the one hand, to the social history of England and the Atlantic world on the other.
